Internet Explorer End of Life

Starting this week, Microsoft is ending support for Internet Explorer. This means you will no longer be able to use Internet Explorer and must use a different web browser, such as Microsoft Edge (recommended), Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox.

The icon for Internet Explorer looks like this:

After this week, you may be unable to use this.

These are the icons for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, which you should use instead:

Your computer may continue to run Internet Explorer for some time, but as Microsoft releases updates and removes Internet Explorer functionality, you will eventually be unable to use Internet Explorer. You should make a plan to switch browsers now.

What If I Need Internet Explorer?

Certain websites require Internet Explorer to work. Vendors have had years to prepare for this change, and sites that only work in Internet Explorer often rely on outdated and insecure technologies. You should start by checking with vendors to see if their sites have been updated to work in Microsoft Edge or another, newer browser.

If you must continue to use a site that only works in Internet Explorer, you can try using Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge, which is designed to provide compatibility with Internet Explorer.

Using Internet Explorer Mode in Microsoft Edge

First, open Microsoft Edge using its icon (see picture above). If you can’t locate the icon, click the Start Menu at the bottom of your screen and type “edge”, then click Microsoft Edge when it appears.

Click the Options button (three dots …) at the top right, then click Settings.

Go to Default browser, then next to Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode, select the dropdown menu and change it to Allow.

Select Restart to re-open Microsoft Edge to apply the setting.

Now, when you want to use a site in Internet Explorer mode, open it in Microsoft Edge, then select the Options menu, then select Reload in Internet Explorer mode.

The Internet Explorer mode notification will appear. Note that you can select Open this page in Internet Explorer mode next time to automatically open the page in Internet Explorer mode.
